Halkidiki peninsula - from noisy Kassandra to spiritual Athos

Halkidiki peninsula - from noisy Kassandra to spiritual Athos

peninsula of Halkidiki

Holidays in Greece
are most often associated with the islands - Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Kos, Thassos.
But besides this, Greece has amazing places to stay on the mainland.
One of these places is the Halkidiki peninsula .

Looking at a map of Greece, you involuntarily catch yourself in a banal comparison - the Halkidiki peninsula looks like a trident fork. Well, or a trident. There are enough places for recreation and beaches for every taste, from wide crowded sandy strips to small secluded beaches in bays.

The leftmost tooth is the Kassandra Peninsula . This is the most popular and beloved by tourists part of Halkidiki. There are excellent beaches everywhere with clean sand and very warm clear water. The depth near the coast is often small, the water warms up perfectly, so this is a great place to relax with children. Kassandra is also a fun party place where there is always something to do. All kinds of discos and nightclubs are located, as a rule, together, forming entire entertainment centers in the immediate vicinity of cities.
Also on Kassandra there are many villages immersed in greenery and fishing villages where you can always taste fresh fish and other seafood. Nea Moudania, the second largest city in Halkidiki, is located 60 kilometers from the airport of Thessaloniki . Now it is a large shopping center and a popular resort.

The second "tooth" of the peninsula is Sithonia . It is much quieter than Kassandra and is great for those who want to relax and at the same time see less tourists. This part of the peninsula is also great for families. The nature here is magnificent - pine groves, cozy beaches, crystal clear water. The beaches of Sithonia are well sheltered from the winds by the mountains, so it is always comfortable and warm here.

Well, the third “tooth” of Halkidiki is
the Athos peninsula (or Agion-Oros). Only a small part of it is accessible to tourists. Most of the peninsula is occupied by the only male monastic republic in the world. Only men can go there and only with special permission. The republic includes 20 monasteries; no woman has set foot here for more than 1700 years. According to local residents, even the animals there are only males. The only representatives of the “female sex” are chickens (their function is to carry eggs - so far there is nothing and no one to replace J ).
Women can see this part of the peninsula only from the sea: sailing on yachts and pleasure boats along the coast is not forbidden. You can't really get close to the shore.
But you can walk around the town of Ouranoupoli, which is located almost on the border of the monastic republic.

Beaches in Halkidiki
The beaches, as in the rest of Greece, are municipal, that is, they belong to the state. And the local authorities can charge you for visiting a specially equipped beach (the price includes sunbeds and umbrellas). Beaches, as a rule, are sand and sand with small pebbles. Everywhere there is a wide range of different water sports and outdoor activities. In addition, there are still many wild virgin beaches in secluded beautiful bays on the peninsula.

Kallithea is the main tourist center of the Kassandra peninsula. The center of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. The best option for those who aim not to be bored.

Nea Potidea is a small resort town that stands in the narrowest part of the isthmus that connects the Kassandra peninsula with the rest of Greece.

Nea Fokia - uhthat small resort village on Kassandra is a good choice for gourmets. Previously, only fishermen lived here. Therefore, to this day there are the best fish taverns in the area.

Neos Marmaras is the center of tourism for the entire peninsula, there is no other way to call this village on the western coast of the Sithonia peninsula. Here, while the rest of the resorts are "sleeping", life is in full swing.

Nikiti is a resort village located in the west of Sithonia. From here, the closest thing is not only to Thessaloniki, but also to the most interesting places in Greece.

Toroni is a resort in the very south of Sithonia, a place where tourists rarely go at all. This is a remote Greek province where you can relax in the company of the Greeks themselves.

In the east of the Sithonia peninsula, facing Mount Athos, on the shore of a beautiful bay lies the villageVourvourou . This bay with the beach of the same name is called the most exotic in Halkidiki.

Chanioti - This place can safely claim to be the ideal resort village. Green gardens with flowers, old neat houses and a beautiful embankment. Dionisio Paralia

beach- a wide sandy beach stretches throughout the entire village of Dionisio Paralia, located at the very base of the Kassandra peninsula.

Afytos - This small resort town on the Kassandra peninsula is a good place for a quiet family holiday. There are no special entertainments here, but the sea is magnificent.

Metamorfosi is the best place in Sithonia to relax without meeting your compatriots. Because the Greeks themselves rest here.
