From the end of 2014 ships will not be able to visit Venice!

Following a meeting between Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta and Venetian officials on Tuesday, the Italian government announced that the number of cruise ships entering the Giudecca Canal in Venice weighing over 40,000 tons will be reduced by 20% from January 2014, and ships weighing over 96,000 tons will be completely banned from November 2014.

The mayor of Venice said the decision "definitely reverses the trend towards gigantism in the lagoon."

Passing by the Giudecca in front of Piazza San Marco in the heart of the city is considered to be one of the highlights of a cruise to Venice.

However, many welcomed the new solution.

Penny Guy, PR Director for the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said:

"Venice has always been regarded as one of the most important ports of call for Mediterranean cruising. The cruise industry supports this decision and plans to continue to be involved in negotiations regarding Venice's cruising future, as the cruise industry is one of the key factors in Venice 's economic viability."

Liners over 96,000 tons that are banned from the Giudecca Canal include MSC Preziosa, Celebrity Equinox and Regal Princess (launch next year) .

Cruise itineraries for small displacement ships (less than 40,000 tons) will not be affected by the changes.

In 2014 , some routes will be changed due to new rules .

Passengers who are concerned about their cruise vacation should contact their travel agent for details .

You can still take the cruise!
