Malta and its attractions

Malta and its attractions

But not only the warm climate and beautiful beaches of Malta attract tourists to come to Malta. The island archipelago is a kind of champion in the number of historical monuments.

Let's start, perhaps, with the ancient sanctuaries-megaliths. The most famous of them are Jgantija (c. 3600 BC), Hagar Kim (c. 3800 BC), Mnaidra (4th millennium BC) and others. Each of these structures is unique, but they also have common features.

For example, the similarity of design and material - they are all built from massive stone blocks. The oldest of them is Ggantija, this complex is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest structure created by human hands.

There are also ancient underground sanctuaries in Malta. One of them - the Hypogeum (c. 2400 BC), is located at a depth of 12 meters, it consists of a whole labyrinth of passages and niches. You should also visit the cave catacombs of St. Agates, with ancient burials in them, and the catacombs of St. Paul, as well as the Grotto of St. Paul and the Grotto of the Monks. In the latter, according to legend, nuns once bathed, trying to hide from prying eyes.

Those who are not indifferent to architectural art will also find a lot of interesting things in Malta. For example, one of the most famous architectural monuments is the Cathedral of St. John (John). The author of his architectural project was Gerolamo Cassar 1520 - 1586). The construction of the temple lasted from 1573 to 1577. The cathedral is the burial place of the knights and masters of the famous Order of Malta. The floor here is paved with slabs, which are also funerary boards, the walls and ceiling are decorated with stucco and paintings. Here, in the chapel, there is a magnificent work by the artist Giovani di Caravaggio “Cutting off the head of St. John."

In the city of Mosta, the Cathedral of St. Mary. It is known as the largest temple in Malta and the fourth largest in Europe.
Of the secular buildings, of particular interest are the Palace of the Grand Master, the Manoel Theater, as well as the fortifications of the island - the citadels in Valletta, Mdina and Gozo and the forts of St. Elmo and St. Angelo.

Palace of the Grand Master, as well as the Cathedral of St. John, was built by the architect Gerolamo Cassar. Construction was completed in 1574. The main halls of the palace are decorated with friezes depicting various scenes from the history of the Order of Malta, and here you can also see works by Batoni, Ribers and Van Loo. In addition, it will be very interesting to visit the courtyards of the palace.

One of the oldest theaters in Europe, the Manoel Theatre, was built in 1731 by Manoel de Vilhena, the Grand Master. Initially, "Manoel" served as a court theater for the ruling dynasty.

Museum lovers will also find a lot of interesting things in Malta. Fans of the times of chivalry are recommended to visit the Armory, where samples of weapons and armor of the Knights of Malta are collected.

In Valletta, be sure to visit the Museum of Fine Arts. The halls of the building built in the 18th century contain works by both local Maltese artists and world celebrities - Perugino, Carpaccio, Tintoretto, Reni, Tiepolo, Domenico di Michelino, Mattio Preti, Guido Reni, Matthias Stomer, Valentina, Rivera, Favray, Vernet and many others. Here, in Valletta, the Archaeological Museum is also located, it presents significant historical artifacts, including pottery, tools, figurines, jewelry, weapons found in the sanctuaries and burials of the Stone Age, as well as in the burials of the Roman and Punic times.

We also recommend visiting the Maritime Museum, whose exposition tells about the history of shipping and shipbuilding in Malta, the Ethnological Museum located in the Palace of the Grand Inquisitor, the Museum of Torture and the Museum of Natural History (both in Mdina), the Museum of Roman Antiquity and the Roman Villa (in Rabat).

Finally, I would like to mention the natural attractions of Malta. Among them: the largest sandy beach in Malta - Mellieha Bay, other beaches - Golden Bay, Paradise Bay, and Ghajn Tuffieha; rock wonders - Dingli Cliffs (giant cliffs located on the south coast), Azure Window (natural rock arch), Ta'Cenc cliffs and the famous park complexes Upper Barakka Gardens and Hastings Gardens.

These are far from all the interesting places of the island archipelago. You can devote a lot of time to sightseeing in Malta, and still it will not be enough to see everything. So, you will have to return once again to this wonderful corner of the globe.
