Italy is a country of volcanoes

Italy is a country of volcanoes

Italy is a country that has not only a rich history, but also a wonderful nature. Since Italy is located on a peninsula that goes far into the Mediterranean Sea, almost the entire country is located on the coast. The only area that does not have access to the sea is the mountainous areas of the Alps. Although they are located no further than one hundred and twenty kilometers from the coast.

The length of the peninsula on which Italy is located is 1,100 kilometers, and the total area is 301.3 thousand square kilometers. The country includes a number of islands located at some distance from the coast. The largest are Sicily and Sardinia. The same applies to Italy and the Tuscan archipelago, in which the famous island of Elba is located. This is where Napoleon spent his time in exile.

Almost the entire territory of the country is covered with hills and mountains. The exceptions are the coastal strips and the plain in the Po basin. The Alps occupy the northern side of the country, gradually moving into another mountain system - the Apennines. These two systems are so closely intertwined with each other that it is difficult to determine which of the passes, Kadibona or Jovi, is the border between them. The central part consists of hills and plateaus of various heights.

There are three active volcanoes on a not very large territory of Italy: Stromboli, located on the Aeolian Islands, Vesuvius "located" near the famous Italian city of Naples, and the highest volcano in Italy - Etna, which is located on the island of Sicily. These volcanoes are the cause of frequent earthquakes in Italy.

According to the climate, the country is divided into two regions. The Mediterranean climate, very mild and warm, is characteristic of Sardinia and the Apennine peninsula, while the rest of the country is characterized by the sharply changeable climate of Central Europe. Almost throughout the country, warm summer lasts a very long time and comes early enough. Cold and frosty winters are more characteristic of the alpine area.

As in other European countries, very few forests in their original form have been preserved in Italy, although in the recent past they occupied almost the entire peninsula. In some places, the green "cover" is preserved only in the form of small shrubs. There are very few rivers in Italy, and there are no long ones at all. Basically, rivers are streams running down from the mountains, which become full-flowing during the rainy season, and practically dry up by the end of summer.
