Places to visit in 2014 Usambara Mountains, Tanzania

Walking in Africa is here. Tourists on this continent mainly ride jeeps from which they observe lions, rhinos and other animals in their natural environment. If you want to see Africa of people - and very nice people - go to these green, densely populated mountains, lined with a network of pink-and-scarlet - due to lateritic soils - dirt roads.

You arrive in Lushoto, the former capital of German Africa, hire a guide, and then go at a very measured pace, stopping for a short or not very conversation with almost everyone you meet. East African etiquette suggests that travelers should ask at least three questions about business, health, and family, and listen to lengthy answers before moving on. After a couple of stops, you will remember by heart how these questions sound in Swahili.

Most fun with kids. They can run to you from some high mountain for quite a long time with the sole purpose of demonstrating knowledge of the English language and getting approval from its (theoretical) native speakers. The currency that buys your time is chameleons. Children on the run pluck a branch from an unsuspecting chameleon and present it to you as a gift, demanding nothing in return, except for a couple of minutes of attention.

Chameleons are one of the cutest, comical and photogenic creatures on earth. They steadfastly endure the vicissitudes of fate, sticking to your arm or T-shirt with soft paws and only sometimes inflate out of fright, turning into an elastic spiral, while hissing desperately.
