Surrounded on all sides, like pillows, by cold and damp clouds - the crater of an extinct volcano, filled with emerald, attracting and at the same time terribly toxic water.
If you need a change of direction, a reboot, a re-evaluation, a rebirth, "demolition and replacement of the roof" - you are here. 4000 meters above sea level in itself makes your consciousness changed.
To achieve maximum effect, you need to do this. You arrive very early (the first bus leaves the neighboring villages at four in the morning) to meet the dawn on the edge of the crater. Then start going around it to the left. If we take the crater as a dial, and the starting point as 6 o'clock, then at 10 o'clock start descending into the canyon, which seems gigantic, bottomless... And it seems not in vain! By the time you reach what seemed like bottom to you from above, it turns out that you have gone, God forbid, a quarter of the way down. At the end, the descent goes along an almost vertical stone wall, and you don’t even want to think about the upcoming ascent. But on the reverse side, the slope turns out to be gentle, so the ascent to the village of Chugchilan is not difficult.
And there, a gloomy American runs an internationally award-winning eco-hostel called the Black Sheep, where you can come to your senses in a sauna built from manure and bottles of vodka. The pride of the institution is a two-seat toilet standing on the edge of the canyon with a transparent wall and a view of the Quilotoa volcano, where you came from.
But the point of pride is not the view - but the compost pit under the toilet. There, with the help of sawdust, an elixir of fertility is formed, thanks to which vegetables and fruits, unique in their saturation of taste, grow in greenhouses. They will serve you for dinner.
