Sinemorets - a secret seaside village in Bulgaria

Sinemorets - a secret seaside village in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's Black Sea coast is known to Scandinavians, Germans and Brits, but most foreigners prefer party beaches like Sunny Beach or Golden Sands. If you're more into quiet, naturally preserved seaside villages and hidden gems, head south near the Turkish border to discover Sinemorets.

Sailing the river Veleka by boat

One of the most beautiful places around Sinemorets is the place where the Veleka River flows through a stunning estuary into the Black Sea. If you go up the hill a little higher, you will see how the multi-colored waters swirl and mix in the estuary. The Veleka River itself is part of the Strandzha Natural Park and is full of life. Join a riverboat tour to learn more about the area and see the lush green forests along the banks of the river.

Discover ships that aren't actually ships

From Sinemorets, head northeast to a rocky bay with a fishing pier, where the so-called Ships are washed by the waves. In fact, the Ships are a few rocks located right off the coast, similar to artificial structures. Legend has it that this bay was the place where many ships, when they got too old, were deliberately wrecked and sunk. Ships are one of the photogenic hot spots in Bulgaria and you will often see photographers here, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Do you want to go to a nude beach?

The main beach of Sinemorets is called Butamyata, but there are several nudist spots around for those who like topless sunbathing. Directly opposite Butamyati, separated by a set of steep rocks with a path to cross, is Lipite Beach - a tiny wild beach where there is nothing but sand and sea. The beach near the Veleka estuary is also visited by nudists, although it is not necessary to take off your bathing suit to relax here.

Camping along the coast

If you need some physical activity, head south of Butamyata beach and walk along the coast, which has peculiar rock formations (canyon, Sisyphus rocks, pigeon cave). The trail is not very steep, but it is advisable to put on comfortable shoes instead of slippers. There are several information boards along the route where you can read more about the formation of the coast. The route will take you to the Silistar protected area, where another little-known beach is located.

Taste local delicacies

Most of the restaurants in Sinemorets are located along the main street of the village. The "Blue Shark" serves mussels and fish. "Skritiat Maj" (literally "Hidden Man") is located on a side street and offers a menu of many Bulgarian dishes in a spacious green garden.

Wherever you order dinner, you will need a reservation. Since you're on the coast, don't leave without trying fish soup or deep-fried tsatsu.

Discover nightlife concentrated in just one bar

For many years, Sinemorets has been known for its iconic Koraba bar. This is the only nightlife place in the village where you can mix with the gay crowd of Bulgarians and just a few tourists. The sea view is great, especially at sunset, the prices are fair and the music is different from what is usually heard on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
