Palma de Mallorca. Attractions - Cathedral and Almudaina Palace

Palma de Mallorca. Attractions - Cathedral and Almudaina Palace

Palma de Mallorca La Seu Cathedral
Cathedral,  Palma de Mallorca
In our previous article, we generally looked at Palma as a cozy and very interesting city.
Now let's take a look at its main attractions.
The central place in Palma de Mallorca is occupied by the Cathedral or La Seu , as the locals call it. Undoubtedly, this is the symbol of Mallorca and its history. It is impossible not to see the cathedral: 121 meters long and 44 meters high (like a 17-story building!).
Whether you are approaching Palma by air or water, you will notice this cathedral from afar.

La Seu was built on the site of an old mosque after the conquest of the island by King Jaime I of Aragon. Construction began in 1229 and lasted over 300 years. Immediately after the conquest of the city by Christians, a cleansing ritual was performed in the mosque, which made it possible to hold Catholic services in it during the construction of a new temple. While the supporting structures of the temple were being created, the old mosque was adapted for Christian services. And only when they began to build side portals, the entire old mosque was destroyed.

The cathedral impresses with its grandeur and decoration. It collapsed and rebuilt more than once, but always remained a symbol of the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, Antonio Gaudi also made his contribution. Here, his flight of fancy is not so noticeable, since the changes concerned mainly the lighting.
The cathedral is also famous for its stained-glass windows created in the 14th-16th centuries. The main rose window, known as the "Gothic Eye", is about 13 meters in diameter. 1236 glasses form a stained-glass window with the image of the Star of David.
Twice a year in the temple you can see an amazing picture created by sunlight. Around 8 am on November 11 and February 2, an iridescent color projection of the main rose appears for a few seconds on the western wall of the temple.
Also, in addition to worship, organ concerts are regularly held in the Cathedral.
To the left of the Cathedral is the Almudaina Palace

The building was used for centuries only as an official residence, only the monarchs of Mallorca stayed here, and later - governors and viceroys.
Almudaina Palace is currently the residence of the King of Spain in Mallorca. Juan Carlos I regularly visits the Palace during official events. The military commandant's office of the archipelago is also located here.
Most of the premises are open to the public.

The map below shows the main attractions of Palma, which can be bypassed even if there is not enough time. The whole journey will not take more than an hour (with photography on the ground), unless you plan to look into all the courtyards and inspect all the stained-glass windows.
