Is it worth visiting Varna in winter?
You are probably thinking… the beach resort of Varna, Bulgaria, in winter?!? Sounds a bit nonsensical to most who are looking for a sunny beach holiday. But for many, the winter months offer much more than lying on the beach.
Varna is usually a place for summer holidays. A luxurious beach with hotels and stalls selling everything a tourist might need. In high season, the promenade is filled with restaurants, bars, swimming pools and shops. And, of course, tons and tons of people.
But what does this city look like in winter?
We spent a quiet, relaxing weekend in this usually bustling area and loved it. There is something incredibly special about walking along an empty promenade with a winter breeze blowing through your hair and a deserted beach covered in nothing but washed-up shells. It's really romantic to walk hand in hand.
Where to stay in Varna, Bulgaria?
During our winter stay in Varna we stayed at the Grand Hotel and Casino International. While most hotels are closed for the winter season, The Grand Hotel and Casino International is open and ready to go. Hosting the largest casino in Varna, this is an amazing 5 star experience. When we arrived we were greeted with a glass of champagne and a great room on the 16th floor.
The biggest advantage of off-season travel is the price. You can find great packages, flights/accommodation/meals for next to nothing. In addition, you can enjoy a full spa and gourmet restaurants on site.
Flash or Full House? Casino in Varna
Perhaps the biggest attraction is the casino. Whether you play or not, the casino attracts almost everyone who stays at the hotel. You can play in euros, dollars and lions, which is a big plus for international travelers.
We made a day trip to the center of Varna to explore the city on foot. Inexpensive prices in Bulgaria are a welcome change from our expensive daily life in Tel Aviv.
