30 funniest words in Bulgarian

30 funniest words in Bulgarian

I note right away that in this article I did not in any way want to offend the Bulgarians. You have a wonderful, unique and beautiful language, it’s just that during your stay in Bulgaria you are touched more than once by some words and phrases that sound unusual or even funny for Russian-speaking people. So why not share this list with you and learn Bulgarian in such a fun way at the same time?

Let's single out the categories:

1. Wordplay
2. Cute words
3. Awkward words
4. Just funny

Let's start with the first one - “play on words”. This is a section in which I entered those words, the translation of which seemed not at all obvious. Here, it seems, you hear familiar words, but it turns out that this is not at all what you imagined. For example, “watermelon” in Bulgarian ismelon . Although this, in its own way, is logical, but the first time in the store it is a little embarrassing. Mom in Bulgarian is “T-shirt” . What do you think the "bride" will be like ? Of course, "bun" . Actually, it's very funny, isn't it? Another word, the meaning of which I already understood myself, logically, after some time, is “year” . Here in Bulgarian it is “godina” . If we take a parallel with the Ukrainian language, then “year” in Ukrainian means “hour” and if you say in Bulgarian “I am 22 years old” , then in Ukrainian it means “I am 22 hours old”. This is such a funny play on words.

Further:  “Ambulance” in Bulgarian will be “ruler” . I don't know what's the logic here? "Mountain" in Bulgarian - "forest" . “Belly” in Bulgarian means “life” , so the phrase “Don't pip! Dangerous for the stomach!” means “Don't touch! Life threatening!" .

The next section is sweet words. Yes, in the Bulgarian language there are some words that sound very nice, to some extent - cozy. And the first word on this list is "cat" . Cat” in Bulgarian is “kotka” . It sounds very funny and, as for me, fits into this category perfectly. Further“blueberry” in Bulgarian is “borovinka” and, by the way, which is funny, I sometimes forget how this word sounds in Russian and now I speak Bulgarian more often. Just because I love these berries.

“Aunt” in Bulgarian is “lyalya” , and “uncle” is “chiccho”. And lala and chicho sounds like the name of some kind of cartoon like “Lilo and Stitch”. Let's add a few animals: “Quail” in Bulgarian will be “pydpydyk” (Bulgarian: pädpädk ). It turns out that “b” in Bulgarian sounds like “y”. Is this true - write in the comments if you know for sure.

The first word that struck me in Bulgaria was “cucumber”. In Bulgarian, it sounds like "beautiful" . This is the word that I learned the earliest, because we often buy cucumbers and tomatoes. “Lettuce” (I don’t even know what kind of plant it is, because I don’t eat it) - in Bulgarian it will be “marulya” . It sounds like some kind of “Marusya” - in general, such a gently caressing name for something.

The next category is awkward words that made me feel uncomfortable when I saw or learned the meaning. We can say that this is an 18+ category. So what did I add to this group? Firstly, all words that begin with the prefix “web” - web-site, web-camera - are translated very interestingly, because “web” in Bulgarian is"web" . That is, “webcam” is “webcam” . Sounds a bit like a mate, don't you think? What do you think the word "booze" means ? What will be your assumptions? Actually it means "owl" or "eagle owl". And also “owl” will be “kukumyavka” .

Well, the next word is in doubt, because I'm not sure about its translation, although I have seen it more than once in lists like “Top funny words in Bulgarian” - this is the word “kaka” . In general, this word means "older sister". I'm still not sure about this, but it sounds really funny, albeit a little insulting. The next word is “perdeta” , and in Bulgarian it is “curtain” . We saw this word “fart” in Sofia every day when
we looked out the window of the hotel, because there was a curtain shop in front of it.

The next word is "farts" . And you know, there is something in it, the meaning is clear! This Bulgarian word means "popcorn" . The word that I definitely do not recommend you to say in Bulgarian stores is the word “chicken” , because the first three letters of this word mean the male genital organ in a rough form. "Debel" is "fat", and not some kind of idiot.

Well, the last category for today is just funny words. And opens her word "vacuum cleaner" . What do you think: what is the Bulgarian word for “vacuum cleaner” ? "Prahosmukachka" . But “pele in sos” - it will be “chicken in sauce” . It's kind of like a play on words.

“Hot pepper” in Bulgarian will be “fierce ingot” and this is funny, because, firstly, “ingot” is a funny word in itself, and “fierce” in Ukrainian is translated as “fierce” , “evil ” , “angry ”. It turns out like this"bad pepper ".

The next word is "iznenada" - this means in Russian "surprise" . But “strangled bunny” is not a strangled hare, but “stewed rabbit” . "drunk" is "anesthesia" . Why not?

"Kolovoz" is a "track". I remember that I often saw this word at the station when we moved from city to city. I just saw the word "kolovoz" and it made me cute and funny at the same time.

And the last word for today is “eggs in the eyes” . I am sure that you have already guessed that this is “scrambled eggs” .

What funny words in Bulgarian do you remember?
